The PacketLogic firmware consists of four software modules – LiveView, Traffic Shaping, Filtering and Statistics – and a web extension of Statistics called WebStatistics.

PacketLogic offers an extensive feature-richness in its software modules:

LiveView
LiveView shows all traffic going through the PacketLogic system, from overview down to a specific connection. The real-time capability enables user support on the fly and immediate issue resolution.

Filtering
The Filtering module is a capable Layer 7 firewall. Traffic can be allowed or blocked based on any of the granular properties provided by DRDL. This allows forensic control of unwanted and hazardous traffic.

Traffic Shaping
Policies are enforced in the Traffic Shaping and Filtering modules. Administrators can define threshold levels for different classes of traffic, giving capacity to critical and latency-sensitive data. PacketLogic uses a pure non-disruptive queuing mechanism.

Statistics
Data presented real-time in the LiveView module is aggregated in the PacketLogic Statistics module. Statistics validates that the policies provide the intended results and supplies information to support the marketing of services and to track malicious behavior.

WebStatistics
PacketLogic also offers a web extension called WebStatistics that presents data in a clickable web-GUI. WebStatistics can be configured to only show selected data, meaning it can be used to give the Web user access to his own statistics (for billing or other purposes).

PacketLogic's filtering module looks for high-level traffic that cannot be correlated to devices. This traffic is usually made up of non-established connections that absorb bandwidth immediately and come from a single or just a couple of external IP addresses. Once the anomalous traffic is detected, administrators can take action by squeezing down the bandwidth to reduce its spreading to the rest of a network.

The PacketLogic hardware platforms offer a range of configurations from the entry-level 4 Mbps PL5600 through the PL7720 up to the high-end 80 Gbps PL10000. They serve the most complex to simple networks with the same robust functionality. Completing the product suite is the PL1200 Statistics server, which aggregates traffic data for further analysis.

For the most accurate user and location awareness, PacketLogic Subscriber Manager (PSM) integrates PacketLogic with network systems like AAA, OSS, BSS, provisioning and policy managers. This enables per-user tracking and policies, also known as user awareness, as well as knowledge of where in the network the user connects, i.e. location awareness.

User awareness is required to create personalized offerings that attract new customers, minimize churn, and increase average revenue per user through value-add services. Location awareness makes it possible to resolve or even avoid congestion. It can also control roaming costs through automatic policy enforcement.
