Procera designed the PacketLogic PL8820 with broadband operators in mind. Deep packet inspection (DPI)-based policy enforcement has become more practical or, really, essential for service providers. With an explosion of users, devices and applications, demand for capacity has skyrocketed. Backhaul congestion is an everyday reality. Delivering a consistent user experience gets tougher. Malware and DoS threats get more sophisticated and harder to block.
On the business side, the “dumb pipe” delivery model can no longer deliver sustainable profits. Providers must differentiate with tiered services and special products. Giving latency and jitter-intolerant video and voice streams right-of-way becomes a revenue opportunity.

Launched in early 2011, the next generation in the PacketLogic 8000 series, the PL8820 delivers 30 Gbps capacity in a cost-effective two-rack unit (2RU) form factor. The appliance handles up to 2 million subscribers, 20 million flows per appliance, and 200,000 new flows per second. It supports sixteen GE or four 10GE traffic ports. Having doubled the capacity of its bestselling IPE product, Procera lays claim to the fastest Intelligent policy enforcement appliance in the world.
PL8820 is especially applicable for the high bandwidth and high stress deployments typical in mobile operator’s networks. Data services have evolved into the primary revenue contributor for mobile service providers. Supporting subscriber growth and the changing user behavior of an increasingly mobile social networking society is critical.
Mobile operators typically run 2.5G, 3G, Turbo-3G and LTE networks in parallel. Procera supports all these networks with the same product in different form factors. Mobile operators can seamlessly extend their policy solution onto other networks.
The PL8820 competes favorably in price and performance with more expensive chassis-based solutions. Administrators can expand capacity simply by using software license keys, from just a few gigabits of capacity up to the full 30 Gbps. The system supports redundancy and high availability, including support for bypass interfaces.
The PL8820 tightly integrates with the PacketLogic Subscriber Manager (PSM) PacketLogic's conduit with network management and operation systems (AAA, OSS, BSS, provisioning and policy managers, etc.) to support powerful intelligent policy enforcement. The PL8820 gleans subscriber information during the user authentication and accounting process and dynamically creates user-based policies, traffic control or service packages for each user on the network.
The PSM enables the user to receive the same level of service as they move across multiple PL8820s deployed in a network. In a policy environment, the PL8820 takes on a Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF) in accordance with the 3GPP standards.
The PL8820 also integrates with the PacketLogic Intelligence Center (PIC) to provide rich statistical and graphical information about networks, subscribers, devices and the performance of applications. Network operators use this intelligence to make informed decisions on network conditions, congestion management and new services. The PL8820 supports local statistics for up to 50,000 users for up to a year on-board.
